Oil & Gas Companies Focus Sustainable Growth and harnessing Human Factors in HSE

Experts and top brass of oil and gas industry discussed sustainable growth and the importance of human actions in loss prevention. The two day conference organized by Cairn India along with the Indian oil and gas Industry, aimed at promoting health, safety and environment (HSE) culture in South Asian countries with a focus on India.

With the theme 'collaborate, lead and transform', the Global HSE Conference 2013 brought forth some of the best practices in the areas of HSE. More than 50 global speakers and experts, over 20 CEOs and Managing Directors along with 400 industry leaders and HSE champions across the globe are sharing best practices during the two day conference.

Studies indicate that up to 98% of all accidents are attributable to some degree to human failures. In the energy industry, human factors are considered to be the most frequent cause of high potential incidents and the secondhighest cause of fatalities.

Speaking at the conference, P Elango, CEO, Cairn India, said, "We are thrust with a challenging but critical responsibility of balancing growth with safety and sustainability. It is vital for any 21st century enterprise to engrain HSE excellence as a key component of its organizational DNA. Cairn India believes this conference is a crucial initiative to address health, safety and environment issues as the basic pillars for the growth of any organization which is a leader in its category". Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily, inaugurated the global conference and he noted the need for such conferences to address the critical issues of HSE practices and urged the leadership to integrate it into business operations and respective organisational culture.

Ceona awards £45m contract to ROVOP

Ceona awards £45m contract to ROVOP, creating 50 jobs

Tuesday, Oct 01, 2013

Global oil and gas subsea construction specialist CEONA has awarded a five-year contract worth over £45million to market-leading independent ROV provider ROVOP.

The contract will see ROVOP provide hydraulic, work-class ROV services on board Ceona’s fleet of new, purpose-built deepwater pipelay and construction vessels including the Ceona Amazon and the Polar Onyx.

Stuart Cameron, COO at Ceona, said: "This partnership with ROVOP is a significant milestone in the development of Ceona's new high-capacity fleet. The construction of the Ceona Amazon and the Polar Onyx is progressing on schedule, and with this partnership we're ensuring our vessels have the best technology on board to match their capabilities and equip them for projects in the most remote and challenging environments."

As a result of this contract, award-winning ROVOP is creating 50 new jobs further underlining the company’s fast-evolving track record for delivering advanced ROV expertise and equipment, which is underpinned by its high-value quality of service and dedicated team of experienced personnel.

Steven Gray, managing director at ROVOP, said: “The long-term commitment agreed between Ceona and ROVOP reflects the shared vision of using advanced technology and personnel with decades of experience to challenge conventional thinking. This brings safer, more efficient and reliable services to the subsea construction market.”

ROVOP will deploy hydraulic work-class ROV systems, manufactured by FMC Technologies Schilling Robotics, from its growing fleet of modern ROVs. These HD ROVs represent the most technologically-advanced ROV systems available in the market, including a modular design that significantly improves repair and maintenance times, as well as providing a range of “auto-pilot” style functions that improve safety and efficiency.

Ceona's Polar Onyx and Amazon vessels are due to come into service in March 2014 and January 2015 respectively.

Based on a drill-ship design, the Ceona Amazon boasts exceptional sea-keeping characteristics making it ideal for operations in remote and challenging locations. The multi-layer vessel, which is SPS compliant and equipped with a DP2 system, is a large, state-of-the-art, multi-functional, dynamically-positioned, pipelay and construction vessel.

The vessel is capable of laying rigid pipelines, flexible pipelines and umbilicals as well as installing large, subsea structures using one or both of its two compensated masthead cranes in tandem-lift mode to 3,000 metres water depth. The vessel does not require a spool base to support its operations and can be remotely operated, making it extremely well suited to overall field development.

Ceona’s high-capacity Polar Onyx is designed for operations in harsh conditions and deep waters, with a length of 130 metres and a 25 metre beam. The vessel, which is being built to the highest standard for dynamic positioning, DP3, and is equipped with a 250t AHC offshore crane, is designed to operate in the SURF (subsea, umbilicals, risers and flowlines), construction, and inspection repair and maintenance markets.

Oil & Gas Jobs

With capacity for flexible pipe loads below deck and on main deck, the Polar Oynx is being equipped with a 275t vertical lay system above a moonpool which is capable of installing flexible pipe and umbilicals to 3,000 metres water depth.

Headquartered in Westhill, Aberdeen, ROVOP is a specialist ROV operator with a complete focus on the safe and efficient operation of ROVs.

ROVOP has fast positioned itself as a leader in ROV services. ROVOP has invested in its people, equipment and systems to become an approved supplier to some of the world’s largest oil and gas companies. The company was also a winner at the 2013 SPE Offshore Achievement Awards.

As part of its commitment to the ROV and subsea industry, ROVOP established its own proprietary ROV Academy earlier this year while the company also joined forces with industry body Subsea UK as the headline sponsor of the first specialist ROV conference of its kind which was held during Offshore Europe 2013.

KDB Arranges US$216 million in Shipping Financing

Shipping Financing

23 September 2013

On September 17, Korea Development Bank (KDB) announced it arranged a shipping finance fund of US$216 million for Polaris Shipping, a company which makes the world’s largest Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC).

This shipping financing is for four carriers (three 250K ton carriers and one 208K ton) used to fulfill a shipping contract. The total cost is US$254 million, US$216 million of which is arranged. Lenders include KDB (US$166 million), Nong Hyup (US$30 million), and Suhyup (US$20 million).

Domestic mid-size company Polaris Shipping renewed its four iron ore carriage contract with POSCO in July, and will be in charge of transporting iron ore from Australia and Brazil to Korea for the next 20 years. The estimated sales during this period are as much as US$2 billion.

The carriers will be built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries to be completed and transferred by 2015.

Shipping Oil

CN, Ottawa eye shipping oil by rail to B.C. coast
Hamilton Spectator
ByBruce Cheadle

OTTAWA Internal government documents show CN Rail is considering shipping Alberta crude oil to Prince Rupert, B.C., by rail in quantities matching the controversial proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.
Government memos obtained by Greenpeace under the Access to Information Act suggest Chinese-owned Nexen Inc., is working with CN to ship oil by tanker to Asia.
CN told federal officials at a meeting last March that they had "ample capacity" to match the daily carrying capacity of the controversial Northern Gateway pipeline.
Memos to Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver and to the ministers of trade and transport say oil by rail is an "an increasingly viable option" and that rail companies have an unlimited capacity, in theory, to carry oil.
Greenpeace says the Prince Rupert rail option looks like a Plan B in case Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline is rejected, but says rail poses even greater risks.
CN is denying it has made a specific proposal for Prince Rupertw, but says it will consider any such project as it comes up.
