KDB Arranges US$216 million in Shipping Financing

On September 17, Korea Development Bank (KDB) announced it arranged a shipping finance fund of US$216 million for Polaris Shipping, a company which makes the world’s largest Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC).

This shipping financing is for four carriers (three 250K ton carriers and one 208K ton) used to fulfill a shipping contract. The total cost is US$254 million, US$216 million of which is arranged. Lenders include KDB (US$166 million), Nong Hyup (US$30 million), and Suhyup (US$20 million).

Domestic mid-size company Polaris Shipping renewed its four iron ore carriage contract with POSCO in July, and will be in charge of transporting iron ore from Australia and Brazil to Korea for the next 20 years. The estimated sales during this period are as much as US$2 billion.

The carriers will be built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries to be completed and transferred by 2015.

CN, Ottawa eye shipping oil by rail to B.C. coast

OTTAWA Internal government documents show CN Rail is considering shipping Alberta crude oil to Prince Rupert, B.C., by rail in quantities matching the controversial proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.
Government memos obtained by Greenpeace under the Access to Information Act suggest Chinese-owned Nexen Inc., is working with CN to ship oil by tanker to Asia.
CN told federal officials at a meeting last March that they had "ample capacity" to match the daily carrying capacity of the controversial Northern Gateway pipeline.
Memos to Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver and to the ministers of trade and transport say oil by rail is an "an increasingly viable option" and that rail companies have an unlimited capacity, in theory, to carry oil.
Greenpeace says the Prince Rupert rail option looks like a Plan B in case Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline is rejected, but says rail poses even greater risks.
CN is denying it has made a specific proposal for Prince Rupertw, but says it will consider any such project as it comes up.
